Migrating a drone-delivery platform with legacy data compatibility

A drone-delivery operator moved its database service from RethinkDB to MongoDB, addressed compatibility with older records, and continued maintaining the platform after deployment.

The business context

The delivery service depended on more than the aircraft

A growing drone-delivery operator used software to support the movement of consumer goods and time-sensitive supplies. As the business expanded, its technical founder needed engineering support for the existing platform while spending more time on customers and business development.

Shinetech joined the maintenance and upgrade work. A central assignment was to move the database service from RethinkDB to MongoDB while accounting for records created under the earlier system. The platform combined web technologies with Python components related to flight operations, so the work crossed application, data, and domain boundaries.

The operating challenge

Moving stored records was only part of changing the service

The team had to refactor database functionality as well as deal with older data. A record's continued usefulness depended on how the application handled it after the move. That made legacy compatibility part of the migration scope, rather than a cleanup task to postpone until later.

Some operating defects were harder to reproduce than ordinary web application problems. Flight-related Python behavior required context the maintenance engineer could not infer from a database record alone. The customer helped with simulated operations and issue reproduction, connecting software investigation to the way the delivery service actually worked.

The delivery decisions

Connect database changes to operating behavior

  1. Agree the migration approach with the customer

The engineer worked with the wider team and customer to define the RethinkDB-to-MongoDB approach. Database documentation and direct collaboration supported work in an unfamiliar part of the stack.

  2. Address old data alongside the refactor

The database-service work included compatibility handling for legacy records. The migration therefore covered both the new storage environment and the application behavior that depended on existing data.

  3. Use operating context to investigate defects

For issues that depended on flight-related scenarios, the team relied on customer-supported reproduction and simulation. Maintenance continued after the migration went live, keeping the engineering work connected to the running platform.

Compatibility in context

A historical record can be present in the new database and still need explanation at the application level. The project combined the database transition with legacy-data handling and investigation of operating scenarios, rather than treating those as unrelated assignments.

The collaboration also mattered to the delivery model. The customer remained a technical participant, while Shinetech provided focused implementation and maintenance support. The scope was an upgrade to an existing delivery platform; it was not the creation of a new flight-control system.

The delivered result

The migrated service entered ongoing operation

Migrated

Database functionality moved from RethinkDB to MongoDB with legacy-data compatibility work.

Running

The project team reported stable operation after deployment and continued maintenance.

Supported

The engagement continued to cover the existing system and requested platform improvements.

The project record reports improved stability and better cost control as order activity grew, without a quantified baseline. It does not establish zero downtime, a specific replication strategy, or measured flight-safety outcomes.
